October 8, 2015 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — The Saint Mary’s College Department of Communication Studies, Dance, and Theatre is proud to present Tennessee Williams’s “The Glass Menagerie,” under the direction of Katie Sullivan, associate professor of theatre. Performances will take place in Little Theatre, Moreau Center for the Arts on Thursday, November 5 thru Saturday, November 7 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, November 8 at 2:30 pm. Click for a campus map.

The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams’s lyrical and haunting tale of a family fighting for survival in Depression-era St. Louis. Abandoned by her husband, the matriarch of the family, Amanda Wingfield, pushes her two children to live up to the standards she learned in the Deep South. The son and narrator of the play, Tom, chafes under her roof and yearns for independence and a chance to travel the world. The reclusive and withdrawn Laura finds solace at home with her glass figurines and old Victrola records.

Adding to the percolating tension of the story is the unexpected arrival of a gentleman caller, full of promise—a young man named Jim O'Connor. Amanda's hope is he will provide the family the salvation it so desperately needs.

The Glass Menagerie premiered in Chicago in 1944 before moving to Broadway where it won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1945 and catapulted Tennessee Williams on his path to becoming one of America's most prestigious and often produced playwrights.

“I have loved this play since I first read it as a 13 year old girl. I feel so privileged to be able to direct it now, all these many years later,” Sullivan said. “Williams is so deeply understanding of our human nature that we feel recognized and validated as we watch this poignant play unfold.”
