Senior Comprehensive

The philosophy department offers two senior comprehensive options. This enables us to tailor the comprehensive to best fit the needs of individual students. One option is the traditional comprehensive exam. The exam is composed of three sections: one in metaphysics and epistemology, one in value theory, and one dealing with elective material. Each exam is prepared specifically for the student being examined.

We also offer a comprehensive thesis option. This option allows the student to work closely with an individual faculty member over the course of an academic year on a topic of her choice. The project is first reviewed by the entire department shortly after spring break. At that time, suggestions are made for incorporating changes into the final draft. The project is completed with a public presentation at the end of the term.
