Due to severe weather, Saint Mary’s will close Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 6 p.m. All classes and scheduled activities are cancelled on Tuesday evening, Wednesday, January 30, and Thursday, January 31. Normal operating hours will resume on Friday, February 1. The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our highest priority.
The dining hall will remain open with normal hours. Cyber Cafe will be open each night until 8 p.m. Essential personnel including Campus Safety, Dining Services, Facilities, Residence Life, Grounds, and Building Services will be on campus and available. Cushwa Leighton Library and Angela Athletic and Wellness Complex including the Health and Counseling Center, will be closed. There will be no Blinkie service Tuesday through Thursday with service resuming Friday evening. Campus Safety will not offer any off-campus pickups.
Students, if you have any concerns about the heat in your room, let your hall director know immediately. As a reminder, here are some safety tips.
- Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in less than 30 minutes, so dress warmly. Dress in layers, wear a hat and scarf to cover your face and mouth, mittens, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, and water-resistant coat and boots. If you have extra coats, hats, scarves and gloves, please share with those who may need them. Avoid prolonged exposure outdoors.
- Eat and drink wisely. Do not drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages as they cause your body to lose heat more rapidly.
- Avoid exertion. Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart.
- If driving to and from campus is necessary, keep extra blankets, matches, first aid kit, snow shovel, and rock salt in your vehicle.
- If you find it necessary to travel, do so in groups both on and off campus.
While you are on campus, contact Campus Safety for immediate assistance. You can reach them at (574) 284-5000
Students who have classes at the University of Notre Dame on Thursday afternoon are expected to follow the University's schedule.
