Belles Trumped by No. 3 Knights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's College basketball team lost a 77-56 contest to No. 3 ranked Calvin on Saturday evening.

Saint Mary's scored six straight points to take a 12-7 lead seven minutes into the game. The Belles then extended their lead to seven points with 7:15 left in the opening period with a 20-13 lead on a jumper in the paint by Krista Knapke.

The Knights responded with an 18-2 run in the first half to take a 31-22 advantage with 2:33 remaining before the half. Calvin would hold a matching nine-point lead at the break as the Knights were up 35-26.

With the score at 52-41 in favor of Calvin, the Knights used a 11-2 run to distance themselves in the second period.

The Belles had a higher rate of success from the floor as they hit 38.7 percent of their shots to Calvin's 37.8 shooting percentage. Both teams notched 43 rebounds, but the Knights converted 24 Saint Mary's turnovers into 19 points while the Belles scored six points off 16 Calvin giveaways.

Shanlynn Bias led the Belles with 14 points and four steals. Ariana Paul added 12 points, and Katherine Wabler had career-highs of nine points and eight rebounds for Saint Mary's.

The Belles (3-7, 1-4 MIAA) will take a break from conference play as they head to the University of Chicago on Tuesday, December 18 for a 6:00 p.m. CST game against the Maroons.
