Belles Tripped Up by Falcons

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Saint Mary's basketball team suffered a 71-63 setback to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in the University of Dubuque's Holiday Tournament on Friday evening.

The Belles scored the first five points of the contest and held a 5-0 advantage after 3:30 of play. UW-River Falls scored the next eight points over a four-minute span to stake an 8-5 lead. After the Falcons' lead increased to seven, Saint Mary's trailed by only two points on three instances late in the first half. River Falls outscored the Belles 14-6 over the final four minutes of the first period for a 34-24 halftime lead.

Five minutes into the second half, River Falls took their largest lead of the game at 47-29. With the game still at an 18-point difference a few minutes later, the Belles went on a 12-2 run to edge within 51-43 of the Falcons. Katherine Wabler had a pair of layups a few minutes later to pull Saint Mary's within seven points on two occasions. River Falls came back with five consecutive points to regain a double-digit lead.

Sarah Macius hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds left in the game to get the Belles within seven points yet again, but River Falls took the final 71-63 decision on the night.

Krista Knapke led the Belles with 14 points, which included a 4-of-4 effort from the free throw line, and six rebounds. Eleni Shea and Katherine Wabler both added 10 points in the contest. The 10-point effort is a new career-best for Wabler. Shanlynn Bias chipped in nine points for Saint Mary's.

The Belles (3-10) will take on Aurora in the consolation game of the UD Holiday tournament on Saturday, December 29 beginning at 1:00 p.m. CST.
