Belles Take Eleventh at Calvin Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a race that featured several regionally ranked and nationally ranked programs, the Saint Mary's cross country team finished eleventh at the the highly-competitive Calvin Invitational on Saturday.

Fifteenth-ranked Calvin won their event with a team score of 27 while 35th-ranked Ohio Northern took second with a 66. Saint Mary's had a team score of 279, just one point behind 10th place Alma and seven points behind ninth place Allegheny.

Joanne Almond earned 22 points after finishing 23rd overall to lead the Belles with a time of 18:42.6. The senior's time was a new 5k PR for her and marks the first sub-19 minute 5k of her collegiate career. Julia Kenney was the second member of the team to cross the finish line on the day with a 19:23.3 on the 5k course, which was good enough for 42nd overall (35th scorer).

Emma Baker was the Belles third finisher on the day. The junior finished 91st overall with a time of 20:12.3 to score 67 for Saint Mary's. Angela Nebesny was less than thirty seconds behind Baker with a 20:36.3 (114th / 76 points). Colette Curtis wrapped up the 279 team score with 79 points by finishing 124th in 20:45.2 for Saint Mary's. Her time marked the fastest 5k time of her young collegiate career.

Samee Chittenden was the next finisher for the Belles with a 21.26.7 (144th). Elizabeth Majewski was not far behind Chittenden as she took 148th with a 21:42.8. Danielle Haydell, Mandy Wolf, and Liz Krupp finished in 166th, 167th, and 169th, respectively, to round out the Saint Mary's efforts on the day. Haydell ran a 22:40.2; Wolf turned in a 22:43.3; and Krupp crossed the finish line in 22:55.9 for the Belles.

Saint Mary's will head to Angola, Indiana next weekend for the MIAA Jamboree, hosted by Trine at the Zollner Golf Course. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
