Belles Post Best Score So Far, Sit in Sixth

NORMAL, Ill. - The Saint Mary's golf team shot their best single round of the year with a 325 on Saturday as they currently hold sixth place after day one of the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling.

Third-ranked DePauw holds the lead after a 305 while fourth-ranked Centre (312) and sixth-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire (321) round out the top three in the talent-laden tournament. No. 17 Birmingham Southern (322) and second-ranked Washington University in St. Louis (324) are just ahead of the Belles. Saint Mary's is currently ahead of five top-25 teams in the 17-team field.

Doyle O'Brien led the way for the Belles with a 78 on day one. Natalie Matuszak was not far off the pace with an 81. Paige Pollak and Christine Brown both shot rounds of 83 to round out the 325 team score. Janice Heffernan was the fifth scoring-eligible golfer for Saint Mary's and turned in an 84 to give the Belles a solid overall round.

Alexi Bown played as an individual and shot a 90.

The second and final day of the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. CST at the Ironwood Golf Course.
