Belles Fall in Cross Town Clash

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's golf team opened up the 2011 season with a tough match up against NAIA Bethel College on Saturday at the Warren Golf Course. The Pilots, who were ranked #5 in all of the NAIA in the final coaches poll of the spring of 2011, took a 318 to 348 decision over the Belles.

The day's individual medalist was Erin Devries from Bethel, who fired a five-over 77.

Leading the Belles on Saturday was Christine Brown. The senior tied for fourth place overall with an 82 after matching 41-41 on the front and back nine. Two strokes behind was classmate Natalie Matuszak, who claimed sixth with an 84.

Cara Kielty took a share of tenth place with an 89 while freshman Janice Heffernan closed out the team score with a 93 (12th place) in her collegiate debut. Jessica Kinnick was the fifth scoring-eligible player for the Belles as she turned in a 96 (13th place).

Next up for the Belles will be the O'Brien National Invitational, which Saint Mary's will host on September 11-12 at the Warren Golf Course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
