Belles in Tenth at Division III National Preview

Day One Results

  • The golf team is in tenth place at the DIII National Preview Tournament after a 367 on Monday.

HOUSTON, Texas - The Saint Mary's golf team shot a 367 in their first round of the 2017 NCAA Division III National Preview at Bay Oaks Country Club.

Golfstat No. 6 Whitman leads the field in the two-day tournament after an opening round of 317. Twentieth-ranked Claremont Mudd Scripps is a stroke behind in second place with a 318. The University of Redlands, who are ranked 17th by Golfstat, hold third place with a 320. Texas-Tyler and host Mary Hardin-Baylor are both ranked in the top 15 nationally and round out the top five in the standings. The Belles are 15 strokes back of ninth-place Transylvania after day one.

Three players turned in scores of 74 to hold a share of the individual lead going into the second day of competition.

Ali Mahoney led the Belles with an 85 and is tied for 28th overall. The senior was among the top 20 players in both par three and par four scoring in the round while posting nine pars. Lauren Read and Kaitlyn Cartone each carded rounds of 92 to hold a share of 46th individually. Read was in the top 20 for par three scoring on the day while Cartone had a team-best two birdies. Taylor Kehoe wrapped up the team score with a 98 (t-53rd) and was one-over in par three scoring in the round. Kaitlyn Gray competed as the fifth scoring-eligible golfer and shot a 101 (t-55th).

Saint Mary's entered a B team into the event as all ten active players on the squad are getting a chance to compete in the first tournament of the spring. Lydia Lorenc led the second crew of Belles with a 95 (50th), and Kelsey Conkright was a stroke behind with a 96 (t-51st). Isabella Speedon turned in a 101 (t-55th) while Emily Besler shot a 106 (57th) for the B team's score of 398. Courtney Quinlan rounded out the team's efforts with a 119 (58th).

The tournament concludes on Tuesday with a round beginning at 8:00 a.m. CDT.
