Belles Finish Eleventh at IWU Spring Fling

NORMAL, Ill. - The Saint Mary's golf team posted two rounds of 329 to finish in eleventh place in a field of 22 teams at the Illinois Wesleyan Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling on Saturday.

NAIA No. 14 Indiana Tech won the tournament with a 609 (300-309). No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis was second (301-322--623), and Carthage was third (303-330--633) as the teams played 22 holes to complete Friday's weather-shortened round. Indiana Tech's Wiebke Schlender was the tournament medalist with rounds of 69 and 73 (142).

The Belles were led by Kaitlyn Cartone's rounds of 81 and 79 - a career low 18-hole round for the junior. She was among the top 25 golfers in the field in par three scoring and had two birdies in round two while finishing tied for 23rd overall (160). Lauren Read was a stroke back with a two-day score of 161 (t-26th) after rounds of 80 and 81. The freshman had just one double bogey on Saturday while adding a birdie on the par five 17th hole.

Ali Mahoney turned in a score of 167 (83-84) to finish with a share of 52nd. The senior had nine pars in her second round of play. Taylor Kehoe rounded out the team's score with a 170 (85-85) to tie for 62nd. Courtney Quinlan was the fifth golfer in the lineup and had a 181 (89-92) for a share of 95th overall.

The Belles host the first of three 18-hole rounds to determine the MIAA's representative at the 2017 NCAA Division III Golf Championships in May. The first round is Saturday, April 22 at Knollwood Country Club. It begins at 1:00 p.m. and will feature Hope, Olivet, Trine, and host Saint Mary's.
