Belles Win First MIAA NCAA Playoff Round

GRANGER, Ind. - The Saint Mary's golf team won the first of three 18-hole rounds which will collectively determine the MIAA's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship in May.

The Belles, who hosted the event at Knollwood Country Club by virtue of their second place finish in league standings in the fall, posted a team score of 334. The lead going into the final two rounds is sparse, however, as Hope finished second with a 335 while Olivet placed third with a 336. Trine placed fourth with a team score of 352.

Olivet's Nicole Deweyert was the round medalist with a five-over par 77.

Ali Mahoney led the Belles with an 80 to finish second overall. She carded a birdie and had 10 pars while tying for the best par four scoring in the round. Lauren Read tied for third place with an 81 on the day. The freshman led all players with 11 pars and also had a birdie in her round. Kaitlyn Cartone had six pars on her way to an 86 to hold a share of tenth place. Kaitlyn Gray rounded out the team score with an 87 to finish 12th individually while collecting six pars and a birdie. Taylor Kehoe was the fifth Belle in the lineup and shot an 88 with a birdie and six pars to tie for 13th.

Five Belles competed as individuals at the event. Julia McAlindon and Lydia Lorenc led that group with matching scores of 90 to tie for 16th place overall. Courtney Quinlan and Isabella Speedon each shot rounds of 93. Kelsey Conkright rounded out the individuals' performances with a 99.

The Belles compete in the second of the three MIAA NCAA automatic qualifying rounds on Friday, April 28 at the Ravines Golf Club in Saugatuck, Michigan.
