Whether you are a current undergraduate student in an unrelated field, a recent graduate with a BSW, or a working professional interested in a career change, our MSW program will help you achieve your goals of making a difference in your community, whether local or global (or somewhere in between!).

Working in field placements chosen to strengthen your classroom learning, you will work toward your goal of receiving your MSW and preparation to affect change in the world. With the help of passionate faculty, and alongside a cohort of amazing students, you’ll pursue research related to your interests, develop high-level skills while working in your community, and ultimately find a way to make your mark on the world.

Our programs will prepare you to go immediately into the workforce or further your study in a doctoral program.

2 Year MSW

Bachelor’s Degree

All applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparable degree from an international institution prior to beginning the program.

Completed Application and Fee

No supplemental application or additional fee is required.

Official Transcripts

Official transcripts are required from every college or university attended. Current Saint Mary's students will have an official transcript requested from the Registrar's office on their behalf by the Graduate Admission team.

GPA Requirement

The most competitive candidates will have maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their last 60 semester credit hours.

Recommendation Letters

Applicants are asked to provide three letters of recommendation from individuals who have worked with them in academic and/or professional settings. At least one reference must be from a current or former faculty member.

Resume/Curriculum Vitae

Applicants are asked to submit a resume or curriculum vitae that includes education and any post-baccalaureate professional work experience, licensures and certifications, and other relevant professional experiences and involvement.

Personal Statement

Applicants are asked to submit a substantive personal statement addressing the social work role, and how Saint Mary’s aligns with their personal and professional goals. Further information is located in the application.

  • Applicants with a GPA lower than 3.0 may use this space to additionally address the circumstances surrounding their GPA.

Prerequisite Coursework

Applicants must have completed the following prerequisite courses within the last 7 years and prior to beginning the graduate program:

  • Human Biology – 3-5 hours (lab not required)
  • Statistics – 3 hours
  • Introductory psychology course - 3 hours
     

Up to fifteen credit hours from an accredited undergraduate program may be awarded toward the graduate program at the discretion of the MSW Program for students who do not have a BSW and are applying to the 2 year MSW.

1 Year MSW with Advanced Standing

International Applicants

Applicants for whom English is a second language must submit official TOEFL (80+), IELTS (6.5+), or Duolingo (105+) scores, unless the undergraduate degree was earned at an institution where English was the primary language of instruction. Please note that these numbers are not minimums or maximums and do not guarantee admission; they are simply guidelines.

Advanced standing is awarded only to those with a(n): 1) CSWE-accredited baccalaureate social work degree; 2) CASWE-accredited baccalaureate social work degree (from the Canadian social work accreditor, recognized through an MOU with CSWE and CASWE); and 3) Internationally earned ISWDRES-evaluated degree comparable to a baccalaureate social work.
