Saint Mary’s students were recently given a rather unique opportunity. For two hours in the afternoon, passers-by near the Student Center had the chance to interact with several different rabbits.

With a beautifully sunny and warm afternoon and rabbits on hand, numerous Saint Mary’s students, staff, and faculty members enjoyed the opportunity to pet, hold, observe, or walk a rabbit. Several dozens of College community members showed up to take part.

The event was put on through the cooperation of Women’s Health and Saint Mary’s sophomore Mara Scott ‘13. A native of Elkhart, Indiana, Scott is an English writing major who is earning minors in psychology and biology. She is currently taking genetics class at the College for her biology minor. As a way to help illustrate genetics, Scott brought in a few of her varieties of rabbits she breeds. Scott is developing the Cinnamon Satin variety of rabbits and hopes to have it formally recognized in a few years.

“Research has shown that petting an animal can reduce stress-induced symptoms, lower blood pressure, boost mood, and enhance social interaction,” said Cathe DeCleene, Director of Women’s Health.

“I think the event brought to mind the many wonderful pets students have at home and allowed them to relax, enjoy themselves, the rabbits, the weather and each other,” DeCleene observed. “Additionally, Mara shared lots of great information on all areas of rabbit care, breading and showing rabbits.  My hope is that we can do the event again.”
