Belles Bow to Knights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team (2-11, 1-5 MIAA) lost a 15-4 conference contest at Calvin on Tuesday evening.

The Knights took advantage of their opening possession with a goal in the first minute of play and extended their lead to 3-0 through eight minutes of action.

Aubrey Golembieski got the Belles on the scoreboard with 21:37 on the clock with an unassisted effort to make it 3-1. But the Knights responded with five goals in-a-row to push the lead to 8-1 with less than ten minutes remaining before halftime.

Saint Mary's won the following draw control and came up with strong defense to force a turnover after losing possession of the ball to get back on offense. Lauren Telford made the most of a free position attempt by tallying a goal with 6:45 left on the clock to make it 8-2.

Calvin responded on the ensuing possession by gaining the draw control and scoring to make it a 9-2 game. Neither team had much success over the final six minutes of play as the ball was turned over 11 times while Stephanie Szymas stopped a free position shot in the final seconds of the opening period to make it 9-2 at the half.

The Knights started the second half with a four-goal spurt to push their lead to 13-2 midway through the period.

Aubrey Golembieski notched back-to-back goals to make it a 13-4 affair with 11:30 remaining in the contest, but Calvin netted a pair of goals in the final nine minutes for the 15-4 final.

Stephanie Szymas had her third consecutive game with double-digit saves as she made 12 stops on the day. Aubrey Golembieski led the Belles with three goals and seven ground balls. Lauren Telford added a goal, and Cathy Baxter collected six ground balls on the evening.

The Belles (2-11, 1-5 MIAA) return home on Thursday, April 24 to host Albion in a conference contest beginning at 5:00 p.m.
