Comeback Falls Short for Belles Against Polar Bears

ADA, Ohio - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team trailed 6-2 at halftime before pulling within two goals twice in the second half in a 10-7 loss against Ohio Northern.

The Polar Bears broke through first, but Clare Theisen responded with a goal three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 less than seven minutes into the game. Ohio Northern rattled off three consecutive goals to pull ahead 4-1. Kate Kelly broke up the scoring spurt with a goal with nine minutes left before the half, but the Polar Bears netted two more goals to take the 6-2 lead at the break.

Theisen opened the second half up with consecutive goals to breathe life into the Belles' comeback efforts on the road. Ohio Northern stopped the spurt with two goals of their own, but Saint Mary's was undeterred in their attempt to erase the deficit. Theisen tallied her fourth goal of the game, and Hanna Makowski made it an 8-6 game with 13:43 remaining to keep hope alive for the Belles. Theisen fired a shot high just before the Belles were forced to compete down a player after a yellow card was shown. Despite being down a player, Makowski was able to get a shot on goal with just under ten minutes on the clock. The shot was turned aside, and the Polar Bears capitalized on their extra player opportunity with a goal to make it 9-6.

Ohio Northern made it a 10-6 game less than a minute later, but the Belles still had life and time left on the clock. Kate Kelly won the ensuing draw control and scored just 13 seconds after the Polar Bears to make it 10-7 with 8:30 left in the game. Ohio Northern, however, won the next draw control and took more than a minute off the clock before taking a shot. The Belles were unable to get off a shot over the final seven minutes of play as Saint Mary's suffered the 10-7 loss.

Hanna Makowski scored a goal while causing three turnovers. Katlynn Dee added three caused turnovers. Shannon Weyer and Cara Givens each registered three saves for the Belles.

Saint Mary's (2-3) hosts Elmhurst on Tuesday, March 22 at 5:00 p.m.
