The Department of Athletics, the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, and the Office of Campus and Community Events will host the film, which features the history of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), including the South Bend Blue Sox. The event is free and open to the general public. Click for a campus map.

The documentary, produced by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI, explores the women’s lives while they traveled and played ball across the country and includes interviews, videos, and images of the women who played in the league, during and after World War II, 1943-1954.

“We look forward to showing this documentary, which highlights the importance of women in sports and carries a strong message for female athletes. What a wonderful opportunity for our students and athletes at this undergraduate women’s college to hear from some of the female athletes that helped open the door to competitive athletics for women," said Julie Schroeder-Biek, director of Athletics at Saint Mary’s College.

In addition to the showing of “A Team of Their Own,” the Cushwa-Leighton Library on campus will feature a small exhibit of South Bend Blue Sox artifacts, such as reproduced photographs, scorecards, schedules, and a season pass from 1954. The exhibit will be on display starting on October 26 and will remain in glass cases in the library for a couple of weeks. John Kovach, Saint Mary’s College’s archivist and a women’s baseball advocate and enthusiast, is curator of the exhibit. Coming to the library in the spring of 2016 is “Diamond Dreams,” a much larger exhibit of Kovach’s women’s baseball artifact collection.
