Saint Mary’s College Affirms its Mission-Based Commitment to Diversity

smc logoThe recent passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act has ignited passionate views and the State of Indiana has been characterized by some as unwelcoming. Saint Mary’s College does not issue statements on legislative acts or policies. We will not depart from this practice at this time.

However, I want to highlight that for many years, Saint Mary’s students, faculty, and staff have engaged in respectful dialogue to create College policies to foster a welcoming community for all. Discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated at Saint Mary’s. The College’s policies are consistent with our Catholic identity to respect all persons because of their God-given dignity. In addition, the College’s Hiring Handbook includes a mission-based commitment to diversity that is “a radical call to every member of the campus community to explore the richness of human experience. This call challenges the whole College to appreciate, respect, celebrate, and learn from differences in gender, ethnicity, race, socio-economic status, religion, sexual orientation, and abilities/disabilities.  Instead of alienating us from each other, appreciating differences for their own sakes enables Saint Mary’s to become a stronger learning and teaching community.”

We uphold our mission and stand firm in our active commitment to the value of justice that challenges the College to continue to develop programs which affirm human dignity.

Respectfully,

Shari Rodriguez

Vice President, College Relations
