February 20, 2015 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—Saint Mary’s students who want to know if there’s a free computer in the library or an open washing machine in their residence hall, check on a homework assignment or a grade, see what’s on the lunch menu or if there’s something to do on campus tonight, are in luck. There’s an app for that. It’s called BelleMobile and it’s available for download for iOS or Android devices.

The Department of Information Technology (IT) unveiled BelleMobile today as part of Saint Mary’s first-ever Social Media Week, a week devoted to engaging students in different ways through the College’s social media sites. BelleMobile boasts a platform with icons that take the user to the College’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts as well as directories, news, and sports web pages.

Chief Information Officer Michael Boehm says IT they worked with a vendor, Dublabs, to create the app. Dublabs has partnered with nearly 200 colleges and schools on such projects and provided guidance as to what functions should appear on the Saint Mary’s application. Boehm points out that student input was part of the process all along.

“We worked with student focus groups at the beginning of the process to get their ideas and input as to what functions they would like to see,” Boehm said. “Once we had a prototype app, we solicited input from students who work in IT as new features were added. They helped flesh out some ideas.”

While visitors to the College, like prospective students and their families, may find the app helpful, current students is the primary audience as BelleMobile gives them one-stop shopping for most things that touch their lives. Faculty and staff may also find it useful.

BelleMobile has a number of features access to many College services:

  • Press releases
  • Events Calendar
  • Important Phone Numbers
  • Interactive Campus Map
  • Courses, with login access schedules, assignments, grades, etc.
  • Bookstore
  • Dining Services
  • Student Organizations
  • Library
  • Laundry Room Status
  • Online Directory
  • Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • ResNet Problem Report Forms for Students
  • Computer Cluster Availability

There are also links to Alumnae Relations, University of Notre Dame athletics and the student newspaper, The Observer. Boehm said this is the first release of the app and, as is the case with most smart phone and tablet apps, there will be periodic updates.
