February 24, 2015 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—A recent Always Super Bowl commercial encouraging girls, young and old, to be confident, has gone viral. The trending hashtag #LikeAGirl has quickly become the talk of social media. The commercial depicts how girls are often derided and ridiculed for playing or wanting to play sports, which could negatively affect their self-esteem and whether to play.

What better place than a women’s college to expose girls to the joys of sports and fitness? The Saint Mary’s College Department of Athletics, in cooperation with the Women’s Sports Foundation, will host a free sports clinic to celebrate "National Girls & Women in Sports Day." The event will take place in Angela Athletic Facility this Friday, Feb. 27 between 6 and 8 p.m. (Click for a campus map.)

More than 80 girls between the ages of 6 and 12 are signed up to take part in the sports clinic, which will be run by counselors that are Saint Mary’s collegiate athletes in all eight varsity sports that the school offers. There will be four 30-minute sessions, so each participant will be exposed to four sports.

“Our lives have been impacted in such positive ways through our participation in sports,” said Julie Schroeder-Biek, director of athletics, speaking for athletes and her staff. “Offering this clinic is a great way for us to show these young girls the many benefits that come with sports—health, fitness, fun, and friends. Our student-athletes are so engaging. I think the girls will just love the attention that they’ll receive from them, and we hope that our athletes’ passion for sports will be contagious.”

Media may contact Sarah Miesle, sports information director, with any questions regarding the event or to arrange interviews. She can be reached by phone at (574) 284-5290 or email at smiesle@saintmarys.edu.
