Dance Marathon hosts 5K race in honor of Riley patient

September 26, 2016 (Notre Dame, Ind.)— Saint Mary’s College Dance Marathon (SMCDM) will host its second annual race in honor of Charlotte Terry, a former patient at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, who lost her battle with brain cancer at 10 months old. On Saturday, Oct. 1 the 5K race will begin at the Welcome Center at 8 a.m. and registration is $10.

The 5K race is one of the many ways that SMCDM raises money for Riley Hospital for Children throughout the year. Last year, SMCDM raised $105,963 — the most ever raised in the history of the organization since it was founded at the College in 2005. This year’s 12-hour event will be held on Saturday, April 1 at Holy Cross College, due to the renovation of Angela Athletic Facility at Saint Mary’s.

SMCDM is more than a long-distance relationship between Saint Mary’s College and Riley Hospital, which is about three hours south of campus. Families from St. Joseph and surrounding counties turn to Riley Hospital and its regional clinics more than 5,000 times each year for compassionate care, comfort, and support for their children. For more than 20 years Riley Hospital physicians have traveled to South Bend to provide medical care for children. Ten out of 10 medical specialty programs are ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report’s 2016-17 of Best Children’s Hospitals.
