Former History Professor Returns to Discuss Her New Book

Edith Miguda

April 18, 2016 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — Saint Mary’s College is proud to welcome back to campus history professor Edith (Miguda) Chillo for a talk entitled “Recovery, Healing, and Restoration through Isaiah 54,” based on her book by the same name. She will offer her lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 in Stapleton Lounge, Le Mans Hall. The event is free and open to the public. The talk is sponsored by the Center of Women’s Intercultural Leadership at Saint Mary's College and the following academic departments and programs:Gender and Women’s Studies, Global Studies, Intercultural  Studies, History, and Political Science.

Chillo’s book explores her past, which included a relationship with a star athlete in her home country of Kenya, with whom she had a daughter. He abandoned them and Chillo and her daughter moved on with their lives. Chillo would obtain her doctorate and go on to teach in the U.S., including at Saint Mary’s for several years. Three decades after the breakup, Chillo, a Christian, says she received a visitation by God.

“Through the Holy Spirit talking to me as a person right next to me, Christ recovers this past I long buried, reveals to me how wounds from the breakup, unknown to me, tossed me from one complex relationship to another. Christ heals me from these pains, and then restores me to the knowledge and acceptance of the sufficient grace of God.”
