Saint Mary’s Makes Martin Luther King Jr. Day a College Holiday

October 26, 2018 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — Saint Mary’s Interim President Nancy Nekvasil announced today that the College will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a campus holiday for the first time in recent history, allowing faculty, staff, and students to honor Dr. King’s life and work on Monday, January 21, 2019.

“This holiday designation will allow Saint Mary’s students, faculty and staff to take a more active role in the celebration of Dr. King through participation in programs and service events,” Nekvasil said. “We believe our campus community should honor Dr. King’s life and achievements and draw inspiration from his legacy.”

To accommodate the academic schedule, the College will convert Friday, May 3 to a “Monday” class schedule, which can be used by faculty for teaching time up to 2 p.m. The remainder of May 3 will be set aside as study time for students preparing for finals.  In addition, Spring final exams will not begin until 1 p.m. on Monday, May 6, allowing for additional study time in the morning.

“I’m grateful for the efforts of our campus community in making these adjustments,” Nekvasil said.
