Saint Mary’s College Presents the Musical "Chicago"

Chicago

April 1, 2016 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — The Saint Mary’s College Department of Communication Studies, Dance, and Theatre and the Department of Music are proud to present the Broadway hit Chicago under the direction of associate professor of theatre Mark Abram-Copenhaver in the O’Laughlin Auditorium, Moreau Center for the Arts.  Performances will be Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday April 17 at 2:30 p.m.

This is an American musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb. The original Broadway production opened in 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre with choreography by Bob Fosse.  Set in the legendary city during the roaring “jazz hot” 1920s, Chicago tells the story of two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in Cook County Jail. Nightclub star Velma is serving time for killing her husband and sister after discovering their affair. Driven chorus girl Roxie is locked up for killing boyfriend with whom the married woman has been having an affair. Not one to rest on her laurels, Velma enlists the help of prison matron Mama Morton and slickster lawyer Billy Flynn, who turn Velma’s incarceration into a murder-of-the-week media frenzy, thus preparing the world for a splashy showbiz comeback. But Roxie’s got some of her own tricks up her sleeve…

The Saint Mary’s College production features a cast of 45 female and guest male dancer/singer/performers who bring this glitzy and ironic story to life using some of Fosse’s original choreography in a lavish production with a full live orchestra. The chair of the Department of Music, Nancy Menk, will conduct the orchestra.  The show features timeless classics as “The Cell Block Tango,” “We Both Reached For the Gun”, and “All That Jazz.” Tickets can be purchased at MoreauCenter.com or by calling the Box Office at (574) 284-4626.
