Saint Mary’s joins LimeBike program

August 9, 2017 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — Today, Saint Mary’s College joins the city of South Bend, the University of Notre Dame, and Holy Cross College by offering bicycles that can be rented through the LimeBike share program. Saint Mary’s will receive a fleet of 50 LimeBikes.

South Bend was the third U.S. city to begin the dockless bike share program in mid-July, with the program expanding to the tri-campus community — Saint Mary’s, Notre Dame, and Holy Cross — this week.

LimeBike’s dockless bike sharing model means users don’t have to take bikes to specific places once they’re finished riding. Bikes can be left in any legal parking spot, bike racks and on sidewalks not obstructing traffic. A trip ends when the user presses a lever that locks the back tire.

Bikes are unlocked with an app by either scanning the QR code or typing in the bike number. Saint Mary’s students, faculty and staff will receive a reduced rate of 50 cents per half hour when using a “saintmarys.edu” email address.

LimeBikes can be located via the LimeBike mobile app available for download at limebike.com.

Vice President of Student Affairs Karen Johnson said the partnership with LimeBike allows students access to another mode of transportation.

“Many Saint Mary’s students come from out of state and don’t have access to a bicycle,” Johnson said. “The partnership provides students with a fun, healthy and affordable transit option.”
