Above and Beyond

Monica Aguirre ’11 believes that supporting and helping others is her obligation to both God and her community. “I really do strive to love others as Christ has loved me.” Part of that, she says, is helping each other when we are struggling.

Her major, social work, with a minor in political science, allows her to fulfill her Christian obligation while she is a student and as preparation for a career spent helping others. She is now preparing for her senior year when she will embark upon a field placement with a local social service agency.

Monica points out that one great resource here is the caring and helpful professors. She says that the social work faculty in particular “go above and beyond to help us in any they can. I have learned so much from them and I have had so much fun in all of my classes.”

Monica is actively involved in the College community outside of classes, as well. As president of the Africa Faith and Justice Network, vice president of the Environmental Action Coalition, and a member of the Social Work Club, even her extracurricular activities provide her with opportunities to help people in South Bend and throughout the world.

Through Saint Mary’s Office of Civic and Social Engagement (OCSE), Monica had the opportunity to spend her recent Thanksgiving break helping people in need. After receiving an email from OCSE director Carrie Call, Monica signed up for a service experience with the Indianapolis Peace Institute. The Institute gives students a chance to spend their Thanksgiving, fall, spring, and summer breaks doing something that is valuable to communities throughout Indiana. Not only did Monica get to help out in Indianapolis for Thanksgiving, she says that the experience was a great “bonding opportunity” and a chance to make friends while helping others.

All of these experiences have propelled Monica on the path to a career in social service. When asked why she enjoys serving others so much, Monica responds, “It really helps you get your priorities in order and renews your spirit.”
