More than 100 kids spent the day experimenting with long-chain polymers, or chemical compounds of bonded molecules, in Science Hall. Pope John XXIII led the church from 1958 to his death in 1963. Pope John Paul II led the Roman Catholic faith from 1978 until his death in 2005. Religious studies professor Joseph Incandela says both united the Church. "You have two that were linked in ways that some have considered to draw the message that the church welcomes both those who are more liberal and more conservative," Incandela said. Students Facilitate National Letter-Writing Campaign to Pope (Observer... Pope Francis asked, and Saint Mary’s delivered — literally. Last fall, 10 Saint Mary’s students, the Office of Campus Ministry, and the Center for Spirituality came together to discuss ways in which the Catholic Church could better reach young women around the world. Together, the group came to one conclusion: write to Pope Francis. Who could have predicted that a year later, a Saint Mary's College student and the president would be personally delivering Pope Francis a 5" binder the letters and art from Catholic young women from all over the U.S. The student newspaper, the Observer, has this in-depth story. Students Conduct Oral History Project with Sisters (South Bend Tribune... Professor Marne Austin had a unique assignment for students in her Into to Communication Studies course: an oral history project where students were paired with Sisters of the Holy Cross. While the congregation's motherhouse is on campus, many of the students hadn't had occasion to get to know these women of faith. It was an opportunity for students to hone their interview and listening skills as communicators, while getting to know members of a subculture on campus. It was also a chance to become better familiar with the congregation that founded and still sponsors the College.
