Holy Cross Harvest to collect donations for pantries (South Bend Tribu... The Holy Cross institutions of Saint Mary’s College, Holy Cross College, and the University of Notre Dame will hold the third Holy Cross Harvest, “harvesting” food and monetary donations for various food pantries. Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s will hold their drives Monday to Feb. 15, while Holy Cross College will hold its harvest drive during the entire month of February. It's an example of going "Beyond the Campus" to make a difference in the community. Saint Mary’s College Announces Dean of Faculty Saint Mary’s College is pleased to announce that, after a national search, Vickie Lynne Hess has joined the College as dean of faculty. She earned her PhD at Indiana University, Bloomington and worked as a professor and administrator at Indiana Wesleyan in Marion for 25 years. She hails originally from New York City and most recently from American International College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where she served as an academic dean since 2006. She is a product of an undergraduate women’s college, graduating from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. Students Energized by March for Life Experience (The Observer) The presidential inauguration last Monday was not the only event that drew crowds to Washington D.C. last week. Friday was the March for Life, an annual pro-life rally held in the city around the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe vs. Wade. Lisa Sowle Cahill, Aquinas Symposium Speaker, to Lecture Saint Mary's College is pleased to announce that Lisa Sowle Cahill, the J. Donald Monan Professor in Theology at Boston College, is the speaker for the 16th Annual Symposium on St. Thomas Aquinas. The talk will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 31 in the Student Center Lounge. The event is free and open to the public. OPINION: The Lives of Girls in Indiana (South Bend Tribune) Last week, Saint Mary's College released a comprehensive study on the health and well-being of Hoosier girls, ages 10-19. The report, called "The Status of Girls in Indiana 2013," highlights various aspects of a young woman’s life, including health and education, and the challenges they face. The South Bend Tribune's Editorial Board met with Saint Mary's President Carol Ann Mooney and Kristin Jehring, assistant professor of mathematics, about how the report was compiled and their hope as to how it's used as a resource to help Hoosier girls. College Announces New VP for Finance and Administration Saint Mary's College is pleased to announce that Susan K. Bolt has joined the College as the Vice President for Finance and Administration. Bolt has 26 years of experience working in finance in higher education settings, including at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan and the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut. National Recognition for Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership Last night, on behalf of the Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL) at Saint Mary's College, Senior Vice President and Dean of Faculty Patricia Fleming accepted the Diversity and Inclusion Award from the National Council for Research on Women (NCRW). CWIL was recognized at the opening night reception of NCRW’s annual conference held at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. NCRW is a network of 120 leading research, policy and advocacy centers committed to improving the lives of women and girls. 2012 McMahon Aquinas Lecture Announced Saint Mary’s College proudly announces that renowned philosopher John Haldane will give the 2012 McMahon Aquinas Lecture titled “Life, Mind, and Evolution: A Tale of Two Thomases” on Wednesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Lounge. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend. Saint Mary's SPARKS Women-owned Businesses (WSBT-TV) Local women interested in entrepreneurship are encouraged to attend a screening for the SPARK program. SPARK is an eleven-week entrepreneurship training program intended to assist under-resourced, high-potential entrepreneurs to SPARK businesses. Those interested must apply in person at a screening on Friday, February 22 from 8 to 11 a.m. in Spes Unica Hall, room 334. SPARK is run through the Women's Entrepreneurship Initiative at Saint Mary's College.
