Monrad Professor of Christian Studies, Harvard Divinity School. “Islam Between Violence and Peace” Lecture Planned The Saint Mary's College Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL), in conjunction with the Center for Spirituality, will welcome Dr. A. Rashied Omar to campus next week. Omar, of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, will present his lecture “Islam Between Violence and Peace.” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 25. College to Recognize Students With Service Awards The Office for Civic and Social Engagement (OCSE) is pleased to announce that six students will receive six unique service awards on Tuesday, April 10. Five of the awards are named for Sisters of the Holy Cross. The Sisters of the Holy Cross founded the College. The sixth award is named for an alumna, Patricia Arch Green ’61, who lived a life dedicated to serving others. Dance Marathon Hosts Dinner for Riley Families (The Observer) On Friday night, it is everyone’s birthday at a special dinner hosted by Saint Mary’s College Dance Marathon in honor of the children and families of Riley Hospital for Children. The Dance Marathon raises funds throughout the year to help the hospital in efforts to save the lives of children. The fundraising will culminate with the Dance Marathon on March 23, 2013. "Women in Baseball" Lecture: Justine Siegal The “Women in Baseball” exhibit includes a lecture entitled “Diamond Dreams—Girls and Women in Baseball” by Justine Siegal, founder of Baseball for All, a non-profit organization that advocates that both sexes be allowed to play ball. Siegal’s lecture will be held Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Vander Vennet Theatre, on the ground level of the Student Center. Saint Mary’s College Welcomes New College Editor Saint Mary’s College is pleased to announce Shannon Brewer Rooney ’03 as college editor in the Integrated Marketing Communications department, an office within the College Relations division. She started in her position last month. Among her duties is serving as the editor of Courier, the Saint Mary’s College alumnae magazine. The College welcomes Rooney back to Saint Mary’s as she served as the college writer in the Saint Mary’s marketing department from 2008 to 2010. She also earned her bachelor of arts in English Writing from Saint Mary’s. Faith and Humor Come Together in Writer's Life (South Bend Tribune) The South Bend Tribune interviews Tom Leopold, comedy writer for such shows as "Senifeld" and "Cheers," about the show he will perform Thursday night at Saint Mary's called "A Comedy Writer Finds God." In the show he will share stories of his career and his faith journey to Catholicism. The program will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Carroll Auditorium, Madeleva Hall. Leopold will be on campus with friend and comedy writing legend Bill Persky ("The Cosby Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show") to teach master classes on Wednesday and Thursday.
