Belles Tame Grizzlies for Fourth Win

Box Score

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Belles scored a pair of goals early and the defense continued to shine as the Saint Mary's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Franklin on Sunday.

The Belles capitalized on their very first corner kick of the game. After Taylor Paton sent the ball into play on the corner, Mollie Valencia cleaned things up in front by sending home her first goal of the season just 2:16 into the game. In the ninth minute of play, the Saint Mary's utilized their second corner kick of the game. This time, Maddie Meckes took the corner for the Belles. Jordan Diffenderfer had her shot turned away by the Franklin goalkeeper, but Katelyn Tondo-Steele sent her third goal of the season into the back of the net to put Saint Mary's up 2-0 with just 8:47 gone from the contest.

Solid defense was the key yet again for the Belles. Saint Mary's out-shot the Grizzlies 16-6 and had 11 corner kicks to Franklin's one. Freshman Natalie Warner played all 90 minutes in goal for the Belles, earning her first collegiate win in goal and her first collegiate shutout. Moreover, the netminder picked up a save on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute of the game.

Off to their best start in recent history, the Belles (4-0) open up conference play this week as they host Olivet on Wednesday, September 14 in a contest scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
