DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Saint Mary's soccer team opened up the 2011 season with a 4-0 victory over Defiance College on Friday afternoon.

The game remained knotted at 0-0 until the 39th minute when freshman Kelly Wilson cleaned up a rebound in the center of the box and put the ball away for her first collegiate goal. Less than five minutes later, senior co-captain Michelle Marshall tallied her second career goal with a blast from outside the box into the upper 90.

When the teams came back to the field after the halftime break, freshman Hillary Burton notched a goal of her own in her collegiate debut after cleaning up a rebound. In the 71st minute, Katelyn Tondo-Steele wrapped up the scoring for the Belles with a goal from the top of the box.

Freshmen Chanler Rosenbaum and Natalie Warner combined for the shut out in goal for the Belles. Rosenbaum notched a save in nearly 60 minutes of play while Warner pushed aside the two shots on goal she faced in the final 30 minutes of play.

The Belles (1-0) will take on Thiel (Pa.) in their second game of the Defiance Classic on Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
