NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's soccer team lost a 5-0 conference contest against Alma on Saturday afternoon at the Purcell Athletic Fields.

The Scots jumped on the scoreboard early with a goal in the second minute of play. Saint Mary's responded with a pair of threatening possessions that were unable to yield an equalizer. Mary Wandor and Kellen Hinchey had a give-and-go pass sequence along the left side of the field. After receiving the return pass from Hinchey, Wandor rocketed a mid-range shot on goal only to see her effort collected in front of the line by the Alma goalkeeper. Three minutes later, Liza Felix had a long run along the left flank and got off a well-placed cross into the box, but the senior's pass was deflected to the goalkeeper before any damage could be done.

Alma tallied a second goal in the opening half in the 14th minute, but the Belles kept turning the pressure up on the other end of the field during the opening period of play. In the 20th minute, Wandor sent a well-paced cross in front of the mouth of the goal toward Kate Vasile, but Vasile's defender was able to get a step on her and head the ball away from trouble. Felix was also able to exploit her defender and find her way to the endline before putting a cross in front of goal, but the senior's pass was cut off before it could find the feet of a teammate. Felix later played a well-paced pass into space, and Kellen Hinchey put two touches on the ball from the left side of the box before putting a shot on goal only to have her strike caught at the goal line in the 41st minute of play. Wandor made a later run in the final minute of the half. After picking up possession at midfield, the freshman carried the ball for 30 yards before launching another strong mid-range shot that was bobbled before being caught for a save.

The Scots started the second half with three goals in quick succession to establish a 5-0 advantage, but the Belles continued to work to find chances to get on the scoreboard. Emma LaBounty had a shot blocked in the 18-yard box just after Alma's fifth goal. Kate Vasile looked to have deflected a corner kick from Hinchey past the goal line, but the Alma goalkeeper came up with the ball as play resumed in the 62nd minute. Four minutes later, the freshman sent a threatening cross in toward goal only to see the ball roll through the box and away from harm. Kellen Hinchey kept a possession alive later in the half and fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that had too much bend and went wide right. In the closing minutes of play, Emily Rompola threaded a pass up the middle of the field, but the ball had a bit too much behind it as it rolled beyond Liza Felix's range and in to the goalkeeper.

Mary Wandor had three shots for the Belles while Kellen Hinchey registered a pair of shots. Kate Vasile, Emily Rompola, Liza Felix, and Emma LaBounty each tallied a shot on the afternoon. Thallia Robles collected seven saves in goal.

The Belles (1-9-0, 0-8-0 MIAA) start their second round of MIAA competition on Tuesday, October 4 when they host Albion at 4:00 p.m.
