Belles Downed by Bulldogs

Game One Box Score - Game Two Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's softball team fell in both ends of their conference opening doubleheader against Adrian by 4-0 and 8-3 scores.

In the opener, the Belles threatened in the bottom of the second inning. After a pair of singles and a walk, the Belles loaded the bases only to see the Bulldogs get out of the inning defensively with a ground out to third. Adrian then was able to get a runner 60 feet from scoring the first run of the game in the top half of the third, but Callie Selner drew a fly out to center field to get out of the jam and keep the game tied 0-0.

Two innings later, however, Adrian would break through with the only runs of the game. With two outs gone in the inning, Adrian strung together four hits and a walk to plate four runs in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Morgan Bedan laced a one-out double off the left-center field fence for the Belles as Saint Mary's looked to get on the scoreboard. The junior, however, would end up stranded on third after a ground out and a fly out to end the inning. The Belles went down in order in the seventh, shouldering their first conference loss of the season with the 4-0 final.

Callie Selner went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Bedan was 1-for-3 with a double, and Angela Gillis added a hard-hit single past the second baseman for the Belles.

Selner went the distance in the circle, striking out two and walking one while suffering the loss.

The Bulldogs plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning of game two to take a quick lead. Saint Mary's responded right back with a run in the top of the second inning. Angela Gillis led off with a double to left-center field. After moving to third on an infield ground out, the senior scored easily on a single down the right field line by Michelle Duncan to halve the Bulldogs' lead at 2-1.

Adrian, however, got five runs back in the bottom of the third inning to balloon their lead to 7-1.

The Belles were far from being finished at that point. In their next at-bats, Gillis got Saint Mary's going with another lead-off hit. Kate Mitchell then hit a sharp grounder to third base, and the Bulldogs' attempt at getting the lead runner resulted in the ball being thrown into right-center field as Gillis scored on the play. With two outs gone later in the inning and Mitchell standing on third on the error on her at-bat, Lauren Enayati drove a single up the middle to plate Mitchell to give the Belles their third run of the game.

Saint Mary's would get runners on second in the fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to cut any further into the lead. Adrian plated their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth for the 8-3 advantage.

Angela Gillis led the offense in game two for Saint Mary's as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Jordie Wasserman also had a multi-hit effort at the plate with a pair of singles in four at-bats.

Gillis threw all six innings while being handed her second pitching loss of the season.

The Belles (10-4, 0-2 MIAA) will return to action tomorrow when they host North Park for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Saint Mary's softball field.
