Belles Bow Out of MIAA Tournament

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Saint Mary's softball team lost 5-2 to No. 13 Trine and 6-2 to Adrian to end their season at the MIAA Tournament on Thursday evening.

In the opener against the host Thunder, the Belles struck first with a run in the top of the second and another in the top of the third. In the second, Michelle Duncan drew a one-out walk to start things for the Belles. Emily Sherwood was then hit by a pitch with two outs to get a pair on base for Saint Mary's. Kristen Nelson drove Duncan in from second with a single to right-center field to get the Belles on the scoreboard.

An inning later, the Victoria Connelly led off the inning with a triple to left field. Morgan Bedan then drove a 1-2 pitch well into center field, allowing Connelly to tag up easily from third for Saint Mary's second run of the game.

The momentum shifted hands in the bottom of the fourth as Trine had a one-out home run and pushed three more across with two outs to grab a 4-2 lead.

The Thunder added a run in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of doubles.

Saint Mary's was unable to get a runner closer than second base in their final two at-bats of their first game in the tournament as Trine took the 5-2 decision.

Callie Selner threw six innings, allowing five runs on eleven hits with three strike outs and no walks.

Victoria Connelly went 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored and a triple. Kristen Nelson, Emily Sherwood, Lauren Enayati, and Angela Gillis each added a hit for the Belles.

The Belles then faced off against Adrian, who fell in the opening game of the day to Alma, in the first elimination game of the tournament.

The Bulldogs were the visitors in game two and scored a run in their first at-bats of the contest with a two-out double to plate a run from first.

Saint Mary's responded in the bottom of the third with two runs on two outs. Lauren Enayati reached on a fielder's choice, and one out later, Morgan Bedan singled up the middle to put a pair on base. Callie Selner had an infield single, and Enayati scored on the same play on an error by the Bulldogs' first baseman. Bedan, who reached third on the same error, scored easily from third on a single by Angela Gillis to give the Belles a 2-1 lead.

Adrian, however, pushed four unearned runs across in the top of the fourth and added one in the seventh for the 6-2 advantage.

The Belles had runners on second and third in the bottom of the fourth with no one out but came out of the inning empty-handed. Down the stretch, Saint Mary's was only able to pick up one hit over the final three innings before suffering the 6-2 loss.

Callie Selner went the distance for Saint Mary's in the circle in game two. The sophomore allowed only two earned runs over seven innings while walking one and striking out three.

Angela Gillis was 2-for-3 at the dish for the Belles. Morgan Bedan added a pair of hits as well while scoring a run.

The Belles end their season with a 27-13 record while making their sixth appearance in the top-four only MIAA Tournament.
