Belles Finish Florida Trip with Sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Saint Mary's softball team concluded their competition in Florida with a pair of well-earned wins. The Belles defeated Salem State by a 3-1 margin before coming from behind to win 5-4 against New Jersey City.

In the opener against the Vikings of Salem State, the Belles were able to capitalize on their opportunities. Jordie Wasserman drove in a pair of runs on a double while Morgan Bedan had a single, walked once, and scored a run in the 3-1 win. Callie Selner helped her own cause with a hit as well.

Selner was tough in the circle in the opener, going all seven innings and allowing an unearned run on five hits and one walk while striking out four.

The Belles fell behind early to New Jersey City in the second game of the day as the Gothic Knights plated four runs in the top of the first inning. Morgan Bedan led the offense for the Belles with a pair of hits, including a double, a stolen base, a walk, and a run scored. Callie Selner had a double in the first inning. Kate Mitchell had a hit, and Michelle Duncan and Angela Gillis both added hits in the win. Duncan scored the tying run and Gillis crossed home for the winning run to give the Belles their ninth win in ten games.

Angela Gillis came in in relief in the second inning and was too much for the Gothic Knights to handle. The senior threw six shutout innings while scattering four singles and striking out five for her first win in the circle of the season.

The Belles have gotten off to a 9-1 start in Florida three times under head coach Erin Sullivan's tenure with this year's start matching that of the 2007 and 2009 seasons. The Saint Mary's softball team will return to the Midwest and travel to Wheaton for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 20 beginning at 3:00 p.m. CST.
