NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Playing their third doubleheader in as many days, the Saint Mary's softball team split a conference doubleheader with Hope as the Belles won game one 3-1 before losing game two 8-2.
In game one, the Flying Dutch scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on a triple and a squeeze bunt.
The game was still 1-0 in favor of Hope until the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners at second and third and two outs gone, Emily Sherwood tied the game with a single just inside the left foul line that allowed Angela Dainelli to score from third. Morgan Bedan then came up and launched a double off of the left-center field fence to score Ashley Watkins and put Sherwood on third. Callie Selner then helped her own cause with a single to left field to plate Sherwood with the Belles' third run of the inning.
The Saint Mary's defense had a big stop in the top of the sixth inning as the Flying Dutch loaded the bases with two outs, but Selner drew a fly out to end the inning.
Down to their last at bats, Hope had a lead off single in the seventh. The ensuing sacrifice bunt attempt was popped up to Bedan behind the plate, and the senior catcher then teamed up with fellow senior Emily Sherwood to cut down the Flying Dutch baserunner trying to steal second. Selner closed out the game with a strikeout.
Morgan Bedan went 2-for-3 with two doubles and the game-winning RBI in the 3-1 victory. Jillian Busfield also went 2-for-3 at the plate in the win.
Callie Selner earned the victory after throwing a complete game with one walk, five hits, and five strikeouts for her 10th win in the circle this season.
In the nightcap, the Belles struck first after Emily Sherwood scored on back-to-back Hope errors after drawing a one-out walk in the first inning.
Hope tied the game with a solo home run in the second inning, but the Belles regained the lead in the top of the third with a leadoff single by Victoria Connelly, a sacrifice bunt by Sherwood, and a one-out single to right field by Callie Selner.
The Flying Dutch took the momentum with two runs in the bottom of the third and one run in the fourth for a 4-2 lead. Hope doubled their lead with a four-run sixth inning on their way to the 8-2 decision.
The Belles were able to get only one runner in scoring position after the third inning as they were unable to stage the comeback.
