Belles Open Play at MIAA Flighted Tournament

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -  The Saint Mary's tennis team officially opened up play with the MIAA Flighted Tournament, hosted by Kalamazoo College.

The two-day event will conclude tomorrow.

In the A singles flight, Kayle Sexton won her opening match against Trine's Chrissy Uphaus by a 6-4, 6-1 score before falling to Calvin's Megan Visser 6-1, 7-5. In the same flight, Mary Catherine Faller lost her opening round match to Olivet's Caitlin LaValley 6-3, 6-1. She went on to win her first consolation round match by a score of 6-2, 6-1 over Adrian's Morgan Spencer and will face Alma's Katie Meloche tomorrow in the semifinal round of the consolation bracket.

Margaret Boden, Shannon Golden, and Shannon Elliott all played in the B singles flight for Saint Mary's. After a first round bye, Boden fell 6-1, 6-1 to Albion's Margaux Kabodian. Golden also had an opening round bye and lost 6-2, 6-1 to Albion's Heather Vogt. Also a first round bye seed, Shannon Elliott dropped a tough 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 decision to Kalamazoo's Carrie Foura. Golden won a consolation match against Olivet's Rebecca Nichols (6-2, 6-0) before bowing out with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 contest against Trine's Susan Breinling. Elliott, meanwhile, came from behind for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 win and then took a 6-2, 6-3 win in the consolation bracket. She will look to avenge Golden's loss when she takes on Breinling in semifinal consolation bracket action tomorrow.

Sarah Monte, Maddy Gibbs, and Margaret Faller all played in the C singles flight for the Belles. Monte lost a 6-4, 6-1 opening round match to Kalamazoo's Kristen Ellefson and was later on the wrong side of a 6-1, 6-0 consolation round match against Alma's Tara Patton. Gibbs fell 6-2, 6-1 in her first round match against Alma's Lauren Moreau, but then picked up a pair of wins in the consolation bracket to earn a spot into the semifinal against Patton tomorrow. Margaret Faller took a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Trine's Alexis Mack before a tough 7-5, 6-3 loss to Alma's Kassie VanAlst.

In the A doubles flight, the pairings of Shannon Elliott/Shannon Golden and Mary Catherine Faller/Kayle Sexton won their first two matches to earn spots in the semifinal round of play tomorrow.

In the B doubles flight, Maddy Gibbs and Sarah Monte lost their first match but picked up an 8-4 win in the consolation bracket to make the consolation semifinal round. Margaret Boden and Margaret Faller lost in a tiebreaker, but also have found their way into the consolation semifinal on Saturday.
