Belles Shut Down Thunder

• The Belles won their MIAA opener by a 9-0 final over Trine.
• Doubles tandems teamed up to out-score the Thunder 24-7.
• Monica Davy, Maddie Minaudo, and Elizabeth Preister only dropped two combined games in their singles matches.

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Saint Mary's tennis team opened MIAA competition with a 9-0 win over in-state rival Trine on Thursday evening at the South Bend Racquet Club.

The Belles stormed out to a quick 3-0 lead through doubles against the Thunder. Maddie Minaudo and Elizabeth Preister were the first group off with an 8-2 win at three doubles. Monica Davy and Sam Setterblad were just minutes behind with an 8-1 victory at one doubles. Kaity Venters and Megahn Flynn closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-4 decision at the number two flight.

Saint Mary's was quick to clinch the team victory. Monica Davy was dominant in a 6-1, 6-0 win at one singles, and Maddie Minaudo did not drop a game at five singles with the 6-0, 6-0 final. Elizabeth Preister added a 6-1, 6-0 decision at six singles. Kelsey Kopf claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at two singles. Meaghan Flynn out-lasted her opponent in the first set and took over in the second set in a 7-5, 6-1 final at four singles. Sam Setterblad rounded out the 9-0 team victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at three singles.

The Belles (7-9, 1-0 MIAA) host Adrian on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The two senior members of the team - Kaity Venters and Sam Setterblad - will be recognized prior to the start of the match.
