Belles Downed by #1 Knights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team was handed a tough 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13) loss from the hands of undefeated and top-ranked Calvin on Saturday afternoon.

The Belles came out swinging in the first set. Saint Mary's hit an impressive .452 in the opening set with 14 kills and no errors on 31 attempts. Calvin, however, hit a .459 with 18 kills in the 25-18 opener. In the second set, the Belles kept right with the Knights as they were able to trade blows, tying things up at 13 after falling back a pair of points. With the set knotted at 14-14, the Knights went on a run that proved to be the difference maker to go up 19-14 before taking the set. In the third, Calvin opened up with seven consecutive points and never looked back on their way to the straight set win.

Saint Mary's ended the contest with a .228 hitting percentage as Calvin hit .402.

Kati Schneider led the Belles in kills with 12 while Stephanie Bodien hit .357 with 10 kills of her own. Danie Brink picked up assists on 26 kills for the Belles. Annie Bodien had a team-high nine digs in the loss for Saint Mary's on Saturday.

The Belles (6-9, 4-6 MIAA) will return home to host Olivet next Wednesday, October 12, for their annual Dig for the Cure match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
