Belles Beat Thunder, 3-1

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (26-24, 25-20, 13-25, 25-23) victory over in-state conference rival Trine on Tuesday evening.

In the first set, the Belles broke a 16-16 tie with four consecutive points to go up 20-16. The Thunder came back to knot the game at 21-21. Trine would gain the upper hand and go up set point at 24-23 on a Saint Mary's service error. The Belles then got back-to-back kills by Stephanie Bodien and Allison Zandarski to go up 25-23 and then took the set on a Trine attacking error.

Saint Mary's erased a 5-1 deficit in the second set to tie things at 5-5. After a handful of ties midway through the set, Saint Mary's went ahead on a Trine hitting error and a kill by Kati Schneider. Down the stretch, the Belles maintained their lead and took a 25-20 win in the second set.

In the third set, the Belles had a tough time getting their offense going and fell behind quickly. Hitting a -.167 with four kills and eight errors for the set, Saint Mary's trailed 21-9 before dropping the set 25-13.

Saint Mary's turned a 10-8 deficit into a six straight points to take a 14-10 lead. Each time the Belles took a lead, however, Trine continued to come back and tie the game. After the Thunder went up 22-21, Kati Schneider and Stephanie Bodien delivered back-to-back kills. The Belles then clinched the win on a service error to end the match.

Kati Schneider led the Belles with 15 kills while Stephanie Bodien added 12 kills on the night. Danie Brink had 35 assists and a team-high 16 digs for the Belles. Christi Wyble chipped in five block assists in the win. Meghann Rose also reached double-digit digs on the night with 11.

The Belles (3-6, 2-3 MIAA) will travel to Holland, Michigan, to take on #13 ranked Hope College on Friday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m.
