Belles Fall Twice at Carthage Tournament

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team battled against Illinois Wesleyan and No. 13 Chicago despite falling in both matches.

The Belles lost 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) to Illinois Wesleyan and took a tight second set before falling 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-15, 25-16) to the 13th-ranked University of Chicago.

Against Illinois Wesleyan, Katie Hecklinski had eight kills and 12 digs, and Melanie Kuczek added 10 kills, four blocks, and two aces. Kati Schneider had nine kills, seven digs, and three blocks. Danie Brink tallied 25 assists with seven digs. Samantha Grady and Meredith Mersits added seven and six digs each, respectively.

In the match against the nationally ranked Maroons, Hecklinski added eight more kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Kuczek had eight kills, three aces, and two solo blocks. Schneider notched six kills and 14 digs. Mersits led the team with 21 digs while Brooke Fowler had three kills and seven digs. Brink added 26 more assists to go along with four digs and six kills.

The Belles (6-5) return to conference play this week when they host Kalamazoo on Tuesday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m.
