Belles Stung by Hornets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team had a tough 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 20-25, 25-23) loss at Kalamazoo on Friday evening.

It seemed as though the Hornets could not miss in the opening set while the Belles found trouble on offense. Kalamazoo hit a match-best .297 while Saint Mary's had a .023 hitting percentage in the first set. Offensive woes continued to plague the Belles on the night as Saint Mary's had a -.171 hitting percentage in the second set before ending the night with a .036 mark.

Melanie Kuczek tied for match-high honors on the night with 14 kills while also contributing to five blocks. Katie Hecklinski had a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Meredith Mersits had a team-best 19 digs for Saint Mary's. Danie Brink and Kati Schneider each had career milestones on the night. Brink moved into second place all-time in career assists with 31 on the evening (2,972), ten better than previous second place Amanda David's '07 2,962. Schneider, meanwhile, surpassed the 500 kills plateau with eight kills to go along with 18 digs.

The Belles (11-11, 6-6 MIAA) will take on Olivet tomorrow, October 20, for a noon contest as well as a non-league match at Olivet against Finlandia beginning at 2:00 p.m.
