Belles Go to Brink with Blue Jays, Hold Off Thunder

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team nearly pulled off the upset against tournament host Elmhurst prior to holding off a comeback effort against Wheaton on Saturday. The Belles fell 3-2 (23-25, 25-27, 25-15, 25-23, 15-4) to the No. 19 ranked Blue Jays and earned a 3-2 (27-25, 25-14, 26-28, 14-25, 15-9) victory against the Thunder.

Against Elmhurst, Katie Hecklinski had 15 kills and a match-best 23 digs while Meaghan Gibbons also had 15 kills to go along with 18 digs. McKenzie Todd added 18 digs. Clare McMillan tallied 27 assists, and Alexis Grady had 15 assists in the match.

In the victory against Wheaton, Gibbons notched another new career-high with 20 kills. Hecklinski had her second double-double of the day with 17 kills and 27 digs for the Belles. McMillan added 28 assists while Grady had 25 assists.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Meaghan Gibbons was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts. The junior outside hitter had 60 kills and 32 digs in four matches as the Belles went 3-1 in the tournament.

The Belles (4-1) return home to open conference play this upcoming Wednesday, September 9. Saint Mary's hosts top-ranked Calvin starting at 7:00 p.m.
