ANGOLA, Ind. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team lost a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-21) conference match at Trine on Friday evening.

The Belles fell behind early in the first set as Saint Mary's was unable to string consecutive points together until three Trine errors in a row made it an 8-5 score. The host Thunder, however, came back with eight of the next 11 points to extend the lead to 16-8. Saint Mary's was unable to put together the much-needed run to make a dent in the deficit as Trine took the opening set 25-15.

The second set started out much more tightly-played as teams jockeyed for the lead. After a handful of tied scores and score changes, the Thunder gained the edge with a quick 5-0 spurt to change a 7-7 tie into a 12-7 lead. Attack errors plagued the Belles in the set as the Thunder extended their lead by turning that 5-0 run into a 9-1 run to make it 16-8. Saint Mary's was unable to get within fewer than six points down the stretch as the Thunder claimed the set 25-17.

The third set saw six ties through the first 22 points played with the last of those ties coming at 11-11. A run by Trine gave the Thunder a 15-11 lead, but the Belles battled right back to make it a 16-14 score. A short while later, Saint Mary's put together another spurt of points as the Belles edged within a point at 20-19. A Trine kill preceded a service error as the score moved to 21-20. But a Saint Mary's service error and an attack error gave the momentum back to Trine as the Thunder went up 23-20. Marielle Corbett put down a kill to keep the Belles in the set at 23-21, but Trine closed out the set and the match with back-to-back kills for the 25-21 third set final.

Rachel Bonek led all players in the match with nine kills. Marielle Corbett put down seven kills, and Morgan VanderWey tallied 21 assists. Audrey Shannon had 12 digs.

The Belles (5-7, 2-4 MIAA) have a quick turnaround and host Olivet at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
