Belles Take Fifth at SMSU Invitational

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Saint Mary's golf team moved up in the team standings to take fifth place at the SMSU Invitational at LPGA International on Friday afternoon.

Ferris State won the invitational with a two-day score of 667 (337-330). Minnesota State's Kenya Sethasompobe and Southwest Minnesota State's Dana Wagner shared medalist honors with final scores of 161.

The Belles cut 28 strokes off of yesterday's round of 372 to turn in the fourth-best team score of the day with a 344 on Friday. Saint Mary's moved ahead of Harding in the final standings in the field of all Division II schools with the exception of the Belles. All five of the team's scoring eligible golfers improved their scores from Thursday's round to Friday's finish.

Janice Heffernan had the low round of the day for the Belles as the junior shot an 83 for the seventh-lowest score of the day among all players. Her two-day total of 179 put her in a tie for 19th overall.

Alexi Bown, Paige Pollak, and Sammie Averill all had rounds of 87 to wrap up the team score of 344. Bown had the highest two-day finish for Saint Mary's with a 176 to take a share of 15th place. Pollak's two-day score of 177 put her in a tie for 17th. Averill's final of 184 was good enough for 26th individually. Ali Mahoney was the fifth scoring-eligible golfer for the Belles and turned in a 101 to finish 35th.

Courtney Carlson and Katie Zielinski played as individuals in the tournament. Carlson shot an 84 to finish 24th with a score of 181. Zielinski carded a 106 for 34th place with a final stroke total of 205.

The Belles are scheduled to get back on the course at the Saint Joseph Spring Invitational at Sandy Pines Golf Course on March 28 and 29.
