Earlier this week, the Business Administration and Economics Department had their annual accounting awards reception in Stapleton Lounge. The event allows the department to feature several outstanding junior and senior women who are pursuing their degrees while maintaining a focus on accounting. Each year, a handful of women in the major are given awards based on specific areas of excellence in accounting.

This year, five Saint Mary's junior and senior accounting majors earned awards, which are sponsored by various accounting firms. The awards are given on the basis of excellence in principles of accounting, intermediate accounting, personal and corporate tax, and accounting leadership as well as to the senior deemed most likely to succeed in public accounting. Accompanying each award is a monetary scholarship donation from each of the companies. The 2010 honorees are:

Margaret Dobihal '12 - Bridget Anderson/KPMG Award (principles of accounting)
Maureen Temchuk '11 - Deloitte Award (intermediate accounting)
Amanda Gajor '11 - Ernst & Young Award (public accounting)
Marianne Jones '11 - Crowe Horwath Award (personal and corporate tax)
Elizabeth Reed '11 - PricewaterhouseCoopers Award (accounting leadership)

“I am very grateful to be a recipient of this award,” said award recipient Elizabeth Reed. “It is a great honor to be recognized by alumnae and professors who are committed to academic excellence and who have achieved such great success in the accounting world.”

"My accounting award means a lot to me because it is nice to be recognized for all of the hard work I have done in my business classes," commented Amanda Gajor. "Being most likely to succeed in public accoutning gives me hope in the future and drives me to want to succeed because I know I have people believing in me."
