Saint Mary’s celebrates 2017 Commencement on Saturday

May 18, 2017 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce details of its 170th Commencement, which will take place at noon on Saturday, May 20 on Le Mans Green in front of the iconic Le Mans Hall. Nearly 400 students will graduate from the College from 31 states and three countries. This is the first Commencement for the College’s graduate programs in data science and speech pathology. 25 graduate students will receive their master’s degrees.

There are two valedictorians in the class of 2017, Brianna Kozemzak ’17, a computing and applied mathematics major with a minor in chemistry and Elise deSomer ’17, a double major in studio art and English literature with a minor in English writing. The two will present a valedictory address.

The 2017 Commencement speaker will be Illinois Supreme Justice Anne M. Burke. A tireless advocate for children and the disabled, Burke has served as Special Counsel for Child Welfare Services in Illinois, implementing reforms to law enforcement procedures and social service programs to increase protections for children. Burke will receive an honorary degree. Sister Maura Brannick, CSC, and Dorothy Feigl, professor of chemistry and Denise DeBartolo York Chair in Science will also receive honorary doctorate of humanities degrees.
