Careers and the Major

There is a great demand for the skills English majors learn: the ability to read and comprehend diverse material and to express themselves well and persuasively in both the written and spoken word. According to research conducted by the Modern Language Association, the English major is the best preparation for many career opportunities in diverse fields: teaching, publishing, and editing, federal service, law, medicine, business, management, journalism and communications, among others. A more detailed report of the MLA's research and a list of the English department alumnae and their current careers can be obtained from the Department Chair upon request.
