2012 Aquinas Symposium Speaker Announced Saint Mary's College is pleased to announce that the Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, is the speaker for the 15th Annual Symposium on St. Thomas Aquinas. The talk, which is open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 26 in the Student Center Lounge. The Bishop's lecture is titled “The Contemplation of Truth by Faith and Reason: St. Thomas Aquinas, Blessed John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI”. Professor on Mastering Money Management (Sassy Magazine) Susan Vance, professor emerita of business law and accounting, was interviewed by Saint Mary's alumna Jennifer Warfel Juszkiewicz '06 for an article on women and money management. The story appears in the July issue of Sassy, a locally published women's magazine. Vance taught a very popular elective course on financial literacy at the College and shares some of her best advice to women in this article. 2013 Alumna Achievement Award Announced The Alumna Achievement Award, awarded annually by the Alumnae Association of Saint Mary’s College, honors an alumna of the Catholic women’s college who is outstanding in her personal and professional accomplishments and is a recognized leader in her field of endeavor. The honoree exemplifies the standards, ideals, and mission of the College in its commitment to the value of a Christian liberal arts education. The 2013 recipient is Hollye Harrington Jacobs ’93 of Santa Barbara, Calif. Students Enjoy "Sweet" Finish in Math Competition Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that a team of mathematics students finished in the top 15 percent of the nearly 7,000 teams that competed in the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) international competition called Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). Samantha Brady ’13 of South Bend and Olivia McIntee ’13 of Sylvania, Ohio made up the team that was named among the Meritorious Winners. They solved the eternal question: How can you produce brownies without burnt edges? Their solution: a hexagonal pan. Glenda Ritz, State School Superintendent, to Speak at Saint Mary’s Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that Glenda Ritz, state superintendent of public instruction, and Matthew Tully, an Indianapolis Star political columnist, will speak at the College on Monday, November 11 at 6 p.m. While the event is designed for students studying education at Saint Mary’s, the College community and the public are invited to attend this free event. Trio of Belles Named All-MIAA ROYAL OAK, Mich. - Three members of the Saint Mary’s softball team were recognized by the conference coaches with All-MIAA honors on Tuesday. Students Get Some R&R During Finals Week (WNDU-TV) A stress relief event during finals week used furry friends to redefine "R and R."Rabbits and Relaxation is the idea behind the study break for Saint Mary’s students held Monday morning. The event allowed them to hold, pet, and play with rabbits as a stress reliever as they prepare for exams. Student and rabbit breeder Mara Scott '13 organized the event, as she has at the end of nearly every semester she's attended Saint Mary's. Alumna Receives College Roommate's Kidney (South Bend Tribune) It's said that at Saint Mary’s, you make friends for life, but here's a friend who saved the other's life. In June, Teresa Moriarty Kosse ’85 of Louisville donated a kidney to her college roommate Mary Desmond Liddell ’85 of South Bend. It's a touching story of friendship and the bond that has only grown stronger through the years. Activists Participate in "Take Back the Night" Events (ABC 57) Across the country, including at Saint Mary's and Notre Dame, "Take Back the Night" events took place Thursday calling attention to sexual abuse. According to Connie Adams, director of the Belles Against Violence Office at Saint Mary’s College, “Take Back the Night provides a space for individuals impacted by violence and abuse to shatter the silence often accompanying sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. It also allows our community to demonstrate our commitment to prevent violence from happening.” ABC 57 covered the local events.
