Saint Mary’s College Welcomes New Trustees Saint Mary’s College welcomes six new members to the Board of Trustees, including the Alumnae Board president and a student trustee. Elected to the Board for the first time are Thomas E. Black, Jr., Michael R. Leep, Sr., Sister Mary Ann Pajakowski, CSC ’69, and Monsignor Kenneth Velo. They will serve three-year terms. Alyssa Vinluan ’13 was appointed as the student trustee, a one-year term. As the new Alumnae Board president, Karen McNamara Weaver ’91 will sit on the Board of Trustees for two years. Belles Earn All-Academic Team Honor NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Saint Mary's cross country team was one of 187 Division III women's cross country teams to earn All-Academic Team Honors as announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on February 15. Saint Mary's sends graduates into the real world (ABC 57) ABC 57 attended Commencement on Saturday. This short story includes mention that every year the College's Career Crossings Office surveys seniors about their plans after college. Of the respondents, twice as many students said they had accepted full-time jobs this year compared to last year. Art Students Create Robots with Engineering Students This semester nine art students enrolled in Hoefle’s sculpture class Beyond the Object had the opportunity to be paired with University of Notre Dame engineering and computer science students to build robotic toys (a.k.a. electronic sculptures). It is the first time students from the two campuses have come together in this way. Six teams will present their robots Saturday, April 14 at a public event celebrating National Robotics Week. Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Named American Chemical Society Fellow Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that the American Chemical Society (ACS) has named J. Philip Bays, professor emeritus of chemistry, an ACS Fellow. Fellows come from academe, industry, and government. Bays is the first Saint Mary’s professor to be named an ACS Fellow. Echoing Air to Perform English Baroque Music The Department of Music at Saint Mary's College welcomes to the College the dynamic ensemble Echoing Air, in residence at Marian University in Indianapolis. Echoing Air specializes in the repertoire of the English Baroque, with an emphasis on chamber works featuring countertenor voices with baroque ensemble. Echoing Air will present two events at Saint Mary's College on Monday, September 17. Both are open to the public and will take place in Little Theatre of Moreau Center for the Arts. Henrietta Lacks Events Coming up in February (South Bend Tribune) Saint Mary's College will host two public events in February related to the non-fiction book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." The 2010 book, by author Rebecca Skloot, tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, a cervical cancer patient who died in 1951 at age 31. Unbeknownst to Lacks or her family, cancer cells taken from her were grown in culture and became an immortal cell line that has been used ever since for medical research. A Madrigal Dinners Music Sampler (WNIT-TV) Take a listen to the Saint Mary's College Madrigal Singers, who appeared recently on the WNIT (PBS) program Experience Michiana. The 40th annual Madrigal Dinners will take place at the College November 30-December 2. It's a Renaissance-style Christmas banquet and performance celebration. This year there's a new set (designed and constructed by students), a new script (by a faculty member), and the Madrigal Dancers are back. Tickets available at moreaucenter.com. "Puss in Boots," a Music Student Production, Feb. 16-18 The Saint Mary’s College Department of Music will present the children’s opera El Gato con Botas, more commonly known as Puss in Boots, next month as its spring musical production. With a cast made up exclusively of Saint Mary’s students, the opera will be performed, in English, Thursday, February 16 and Friday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a matinee at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 18.
