Department of History

In the Department of History, you’ll study people. Societies. Places. Cultures. You'll not only study these in the context of history, but you'll explore how each of these impacts our current social and global consciousness. With an emphasis on research and writing skills, you’ll learn to think logically and innovatively, and graduate as an excellent communicator.

We offer a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in history. In addition to the major, the department offers five minors: American history, European history, general history, Third World history, and women’s history. The department also lends its expertise to global studies and in gender and women’s studies majors. And faculty takes groups of students to Europe nearly every summer as part of the European Summer Study Program, where they walk, talk, and study their way through major cities.

The faculty in the Department of History is comprised of accomplished experts and scholars who match their passion for history with a dedication to teaching and mentoring. Members of the department have a breadth of professional interests: history of science, feminist history, Latin American history, and Polish/Modern European history.

You’ll find our history alumnae achieving great things all over the country, and as part of the Saint Mary’s sisterhood, they serve as valuable professional connections. Our graduates have pursued advanced degrees at Penn State University, Georgetown University, Marquette University, the National University of Ireland, and the London School of Economics. With a degree in history, you’ll be well prepared for graduate school, as well as a diverse range of careers.
